Special interest tracks

In addition to the curriculum most students follow, two other tracks are offered for students with a special interest in research or rural medicine.

Clinician scientist track

Students interested in biomedical research have opportunities for added research experience. While participating in the mainstream medical student curriculum, students can pursue biomedical and health services research under the guidance of faculty mentors.

Research experiences are available to students during the summer prior to entering medical school and between the first and second years of medical school. Students choose from a catalog of offerings from faculty mentors. A small stipend is available for these summer research fellowships. A post-sophomore fellowship is currently available only in pathology. After completing the second year of medical school, the post-sophomore fellow takes a year of research and study in pathology and re-enters the curriculum as a third-year student. Other post-sophomore fellowships are being considered. During the third year, students may defer one clinical clerkship to the fourth year and take a research elective in its place. The fourth year offers 20 weeks of potential research experience in the Advanced Biomedical Science Selectives and general electives.

Rural Track

Students in this track take a rural clinical experience between the first and second years. Rural hospitals sponsor these clinical experiences, and students are assigned to a community physician. The hospital provides a small stipend and living accommodations. During the third year of medical school, students spend two to six months at one of the rural education centers. Selected core clerkships and electives may be taken at a rural site depending on the resources of the local medical community.
