Frequently asked questions
- What is a FAFSA form and where can I get one?
- FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. As the name implies,
it is a federal form used to apply for federal aid (loans, scholarships,
etc.). Additionally, the School of Medicine uses it to award need-based
institutional scholarships. If you have been accepted to our medical
school, you will automatically be mailed one of these forms, starting
in January. There is also an electronic
FAFSA if you would rather use that.
-
The FAFSA asks for MU's federal school code. What is it?
- It is 002516.
-
Since I'm an independent student now that I am in professional
school, why do I still have to submit parental information?
- The U.S. Department of Education considers graduate and professional students
to be independent. Therefore, parental income and assets are not considered
for its programs, which constitute the bulk of the financial aid available.
However, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services still uses
parental information to establish eligibility for its scholarship
and loan programs.
-
The FAFSA asks for prior-year income. I made $60,000 last
year. Is there some way to use projected year income since I will
not work once I'm in medical school?
- Go ahead and enter prior-year income on the FAFSA. When you get
your Student Aid Report (SAR) back from the federal processor, contact
the MU School of Medicine Coordinator of Financial Aid at (573) 882-2923.
The Coordinator will tell you what to do to be considered for professional
judgment and the use of projected year income.
-
Should my retirement funds be included as assets?
- No, retirement plans such as pension funds, annuities, IRAs and Keogh plans
should not be included in assets. However, annual contributions to
retirement accounts are considered untaxed income and must be included.
